It’s Mardi Gras Time in Panama City!

Being a Panama City photographer I have had the opportunity to photograph more Mardi Gras parades and accompanying events than I can even count. (OK, I could count them…I just don’t want to)

Let’s see…we have the  Krewe of Massalina’s parade in downtown Panama City, the Krewe of St. Andrews parade in historic St. Andrews and the Krewe of Dominique Youx parade at Pier Park in Panama City Beach. That is three straight weekends of Mardi Gras parade photography. By the time the Pier Park parade is over I never want to see a strand of beads again! Oh, there are so many stories I could tell. Like the time I almost got knocked out by a flying Moon Pie or the time I, oh well…forget it. I’ll share those stories another time.

Mardi Gras parade photography is actually hard work. It is a lot of running around, chasing down floats to try and get a person’s name and fighting  massive crowds. Yes, I said massive crowds. One may not think it, but thousands upon thousands of people attend the Mardi Gras parades in Panama City. Everybody knows that the real Mardi Gras events go on in Louisiana, Alabama and especially in New Orleans. Our parades in Panama City don’t come close to the New Orleans Mardi Gras parades, but we do a pretty good job if I do say so myself. Each year the local parades seem to get bigger and bigger.

My buddy who has lived in New Orleans his entire life wants to collaborate on a Mardi Gras book. All of these Panama City Mardi Gras parades have been great practice for that. I think I am warmed up and ready to tackle that project!
